Greenbelt

Time: 83:00
Distance: 12 mi.

Fairly easy morning run with Jake. We were supposed to meet the whole team, but we missed them by about 3 minutes. They took a different route back somehow and we didn't see them until we were back in the Barton Springs parking lot. My legs were tired the whole way and my right hamstring and hip flexor are both fairly sore. The next few days should be fairly easy, and I may skip working out until the beginning of next week.

Greenbelt

Time: 50:00
Distance: 7 mi.

Brian met me at the Austin airport and we headed straight out to the Greenbelt. We had fun catching up and bitching about being sore and tired. I was fairly dehydrated and beat in general, and Brian pushed the pace on the way out (and by pushed the pace I mean dropped us to maybe 6:50). It was warmer than most of my runs recently, but not too bad. We started at the 360 entrance, which I haven't run from before.

Driving back into town it was funny to think how easy it would be to just fall back into the routine here... in a way it feels like I never left.

Week of May 5 - May 11

Distance: ~35 mi.

I started to try to get back into running, but was dealing with a significant amount of schoolwork and a general lack of motivation to get going again. I’m pretty much fine with that, as this is the first serious break I think I’ve taken in about 18 months. I finished up the week with a good run with Tom, Barry and Brian on the Greenbelt.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 92:00
Distance: 13.5 mi.

Fairly easy longish run with Joe from his house. We headed down to Town Lake and the Greenbelt, just going out and back. My legs (and body in general) feels pretty tired, but the run went well.

Town Lake, Track, Greenbelt

Time: 62:00
Distance: 9 mi.

Easy afternoon run with Brian. We started at Barton Springs and ran over to the Austin High track so that he could do a 10 minute tempo. He's basing his getting back into shape plan on the idea that you run at a reasonable tempo pace from the get-go and then just increase the length until you are doing some solid work. I like the idea... get the legs used to running fast off the bat. After that we ran back to Barton Springs and did a short out-and-back on the Greenbelt.

After the run we hopped in the water, got some BBQ, and played beach volleyball for four hours.

Greenbelt

Time: 43:00
Distance: 6 mi.

Easy run after class down on the Greenbelt. It felt good just to shake my legs out a little bit, and I love getting out into the woods.

Greenbelt

Time: 90:00
Distance: 13 mi.

The "enchanted forest" section of the trail, about 3 miles in

This is the best weather we ever get in Austin, and seems like the best weather you could have almost anywhere. The air is cool and the sun is warm. I don't know why I don't get down to the Greenbelt more often, as I feel totally in my element once I get on the trails there. This was a great way to get in 90 minutes of running where you can't go too fast (too many rocks, windy trails, little hills) but feel like you're putting in a good effort.

Finished (of course) in the dog pond near Barton Springs.

Greenbelt, Back Home

Time: 80:00
Distance: 12 mi.

Went with Erik to meet Victor Gras, who is here on a recruiting trip, down at Town Lake. We ran from 0.0 out to the Greenbelt and back so that they could get 50 min, and then I ran back up Trinity, through campus, past Handcock golf course and through Hyde Park home. I was thinking of adding on for 90 minutes, but decided that this would be fine for today.

Today marks the last first day of school for me for... ever?

Greenbelt

Time: 81:06
Distance: 11.5 mi.

Easy run on the Greenbelt with Hanley in the evening my one day passing through Austin. Body is feeling pretty tired from the last few days and the travel. My sore throat and cold is definitely not getting any better. Racing the sun on the way back in...

Rub Some Dirt On It

Time: 110:30
Distance: 15.5 mi.

Ran from 0.0 with Hanley and Burnham out onto the Greenbelt. Feeling pretty stiff and a bit sore from yesterday's workout so going to the Greenbelt was nice where we could just roll along and not worry about pace. Not 30 seconds after we turned around I took a dive on some mud-slick rocks and landed HARD on my right kneecap. After a good bout of loud swearing and hobbling around we started running again and it loosened up as the adrenaline kicked in. Ran into Wetzel on the way back and finished up with Hanley and him a little loop downtown after dropping Dave off at the cars.

Knee was tight and sore afterward, but I rubbed some dirt on it (put some ice on it) and used it as a good excuse to sit on my ass all day.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 86:05
Distance: 13 mi.

Misty morning on the path near the Capitol

Relatively easy morning run. Unreal to think that it was 85+ yesterday, as it was about 40 deg. this morning and misting by the end of the run. Both hamstrings still stiff, but nothing too bad. Went out to Town Lake by Trinity and onto the Greenbelt and back on Congress past the state capitol.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 80:00
Distance: 12 mi.

The Greenbelt is almost completely dried up

Drove down to Barton Springs with Jilane and did a small loop on Town Lake before the crowds were more than I could bear and then headed back to do most of the run on the Greenbelt. Nice to get out there as we haven't been doing the Wednesday runs there too much this year, but ended up wandering a little bit when I tried some new and somewhat overgrown trails about 25 minutes out on the trail. Right glute/hamstring tight again as on most recent post-workout days, but they loosened up over the course of the run. Really nice to see JR have a good run too!

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 90:00
Distance: 13 mi.

The fog over the track when we arrived at 6:30

Very easy 90 minute run from the track across Town Lake to the Greenbelt and back. Everyone seemed to be a little lethargic or sore after yesterday's workout, and it was pretty muggy out (with a surreal fog). My right upper hamstring / outer glute was very sore again today, which resulted in some hip flexor tightness as well, all as a result of yesterday's harder stuff... not too worried about it coming around by Friday, as it has done this a few times this fall.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 100:00
Distance: 14.5 mi.

Wednesday medium long run on the Greenbelt, though we had to start on Town Lake because it was too dark to see the trail. Nice fun atmosphere out there with the guys and we had a good time splashing around on the trail where the water is still very high. Had a weird and somewhat concentrated soreness on my right shin towards the beginning, but it seemed to subside. Definately time for some new kicks.

Got a hamstring and calf massage in the afternoon which helped release some tightness.

The beginning of the Town Lake trail (0.0) near the store

Another recovery run... went from RunTex to the Greenbelt on Town Lake. Happy with the decision to split the run up and it was nice to just relax out there.

Greenbelt

Time: 104:20
Distance: 15 mi.

The water is very high in many areas from a very wet summer in Austin

A pretty slow med-long run on a pretty messy Greenbelt. The effort felt decent, but a combination of parts of the trail being a bit overgrown, flooded or muddy slowed us down. Nice to swim across a few of the sections, though, and the guys who went out on it (Stanley, Harkins, Darren, and Hanley for a bit) all seemed in pretty good spirits. Still very sore and stiff from now a combination of strength work monday and the hills yesterday. Other than that no physical complaints.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 101:00
Distance: 15 mi.

Cliffs lining the Greenbelt trail

First mid-week medium-long run morning practice at the Greenbelt of the season. Jake had the idea of starting with a loop of Town Lake, which was okay, though we didn't get quite as far on the Greenbelt. Once we did get on it though we ended up on a section of the trail with a great view over most of the ground we covered, which I hadn't been on before. Legs not feeling great... 6:30s on Town Lake felt a bit faster, and finishing up on the trail seemed a little tough too. Splashed around in the river a few times along the way and jumped in Barton Springs at the end.

Woke up very early again this morning. Weighed in at 156 lbs post-run and post-hydration.

Town Lake, Greenbelt

Time: 90:00
Distance: 13.5 mi.

First team practice (for me) of the season. Headed from the track down to Town Lake and the Greenbelt. Nice to get out there again with the guys. I was pretty tired the whole way.

Therapy: stretching, ice bath

Started back on the strength routine with Tray.

Greenbelt

Time: 37:18
Distance: 5.5 mi.

Nice easy jog on the Greenbelt with TAW. Water was very high, so there was some mid-run swimming which was nice. Strangeness continues with right calf.
